Beam me outta here StarTek
According to a Denver Business Journal article, StarTek is closing shop not only in Petersburg, VA which will put about 450 people out of work but they are also closing their Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada shop which will get rid of another 266 people. Not the kind of news I would wish on anyone at any time but especially not so close to Christmas.
I was a bit put off by the fact that they (StarTek) put in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission that it had “persistent difficulty” in recruiting a suitable work force to meet the requirements of its clients. Now what does that mean?
I also wonder if the company will be paying out termination benefits to the folks in Petersburg, VA like they are to those in Canada (to the tune of $200,000).

“Suitable”… Could it be that Petersburg’s schools are not accredited and the proper use of the English language is a minimum requirement of a call center??? Hmmm? Or, the fact that call center’s require associates to show up on time for scheduled shifts and not have a new excuse every other day?
Sadly, it is not hard for me to envision that Startek could not recruit “suitable” associates…
Startek is a corporate welfare bum. They open a call centre in a location that has low labor costs, get a bunch of tax abatements, and when the abatements run out or labor gets more expensive, off they go to a new location.
Their history is one of startups, shutdowns, and wreckage left behind.
I currently work in the Mansfield, Ohio Startek call center. I started in June 2008 and believe me , they are corporate Nazis! They claimed I was late clocking into my phone the day after Thanksgiving by 11 minutes. Therefore, I did not get my holiday pay for Thanksgiving. I protested and they ran a check of my badge swipe at the entrance door and said I was 8 minutes late coming in the front door. How could I have been late when the bus let me off in front of the street that enters Startek?? I arrived 15 minutes early for my 12:30 PM shift start. How could it only take me 3 minutes to get from the front door , put away my dinner in the cooler, go the restroom and clock into my phone? Impossible to say the least! This company sucks and I threatened to quit when I did not receive my holiday pay. They did not say a word to change my mind and that said alot about a company that would deny my $74 holiday pay for some policy they did not enforce for Labor Day 2008! They insist that you not be late clocking in, break or lunch the day before, day of the holiday and the day after the holiday in order for you to get any holiday pay! Nazi swines! No wonder the turnover rate is so high that they are constantly hiring people. This place sucks and I can’t wait to find another job. They came here because basically the only other jobs in this town are in jails and prisons! They sure did their homework, for sure! I found out that Startek signed a 3 – 5 year contract with ATT which probably coinsides with the tax abatement break they got from the city of Mansfield. I have no doubt they will be gone in 2-3 years and move on to another depressed economic town somewhere near you.
I could see POSSIBLY docking you for the 11 minutes but it seems illegal to dock you for your whole days pay for 11 minutes. Sounds like a complaint to the Ohio Employment Relations Board might be in order?
I also work at the Mansfield startek. I almost didn’t get holiday pay for Christmas day. The whole restroom policy. Take your restroom breaks off of your breaks and if you don’t have breaks left then you have to clock out. Well I’m a female and sometimes females have female issues and I had to clock out twice on Christmas day to use the restroom. They were not going to give me holiday pay because I had to use the restroom. I fought it and got the holiday pay. It’s just crazy. My fiance works there and had to turn in a few doctors notes because he missed a few days. Well his friend found the doctors notes on the floor beside a supervisors trashcan. He picked them up. We are turning them into HR. I think they were going to try and fire him for missing so many days in a row without a doctors note. We are going to make copies of them and keep the originals. I’m glad his friend found the dr notes and they were not lost. IF we screw someones acct up we get coached or whatever I think a supervisor should be coached because of this. That is unacceptable. I don’t see them staying open very long. Some of the supervisors shouldn’t be there. I’m not going to mention any names but there is one who drinks on the job, another who really should get walked out due to sexual harrassment and MOST Of them should get a first and final for job avoidance. You tell them you got a sup call and they say ok and walk off and stay gone for 30-45 mins so they dont have to take the call or some of them just refuse. The OM’s wonder why our AHT is high. Ya know get on the sups. They need to do their job too. My sup is very good about taking sup calls. You tell her and she will be there in a few mins. I used to love this job. I love to talk on the phone and I love computers. I used to work a lot of overtime as well but now its hard to go to work. Somethings gotta give here.
I work at the Lynchburg, VA site. I’m an ASR there. When I started in Dec 2006 I really liked my job however I soon learned to hate it. I like taking care of my Customers, but I soon found out that Startek is run by a bunch of stupid people! The most recent outrageous thing they have done, effective April 1st, 2009 is that when you are out or late from work they automatically take your PTO (Vacation) time. And get this…they can take your PTO by one minute increments! Yes Folks, if your one minute late you have to call LRP AND your Manager and tell them you are going to be late, if you don’t call before 8am, LRP will code you as a “No Call no show” and they will take one minute of your vacation time. Isn’t that just Nazified? This is no joke! So all of a sudden the no call no show, goes from if you don’t call in before 9am to all of a sudden if you are late and don’t call in before 8am, its a no call no show, doesn’t even matter if your late. Now when you come in late, then you have to contact your manager and they in turn have to get with the Facility Operator and they have to go through this long drawn out process to get it removed. So say I have an emergency and I need to leave work at 4:30pm…well, we can only use PTO in hour increments…so I can’t do that…BUT they can take 30 minutes of my vacation time from me for being 30 minutes and it will go against my absenteeism. Also there is a big issue about Quality Audits. They are constantly changing the rules and instead of informing their ASR’s of changes, when we get graded on an Audit they downgrade us! What ever happened about letting us know the changes first before downgrading us? I guess that’s too simple to do. I swear you think your working with 5th graders for managers, etc. All your concerns, etc fall on deaf hears and you really feel like you don’t have a voice or say so. They are trying everything in their power to try to get people fired, or leave, so they don’t have to pay give unemployment benefits/pay.
i worked at the mansfield startek i agree about the whole drinking on the job sexual harrasment and job avoidance. I sat on the phone for 3 hours with a guy who just wanted to talk to the sup. My sup said he was going to break. for three hours no other sup would take the call because they were fed up with my sups layzness. Oh yeah you were suposed to get graded on the calls at least once a week…i was on the floor for four months and got graded oh once.
u can get unemployment from startek if u get fired my buddys mom was terminated for failing 4 of her calls (their policy is if u fail 4 graded calls in a 12 month period you’re terminated) she filed for unemployment and received it
I to was a victim of startek mansfield. I recently had to free myself of the nonsence that had taken over my life. It is really not worth the money. People keep hold of your dignity
y’all should come to Grand Junction. It’s pretty freakin’ chill here. Lots of cool sups and co-workers, a couple of crackheads but hey they’re pretty much everywhere, ya know?
I love StarTek mansfield. If you show up for work every day, work your scheduled shift, you have no problems. I started out as a CSR in April of 2008, and by showing up to work every day and doing my job with the resources provided, I quickly got promoted.
The people who like to complain about StarTek, are also the ones who are consistently late, the ones who refuse to do their job correctly, and the ones who really do not want to work there.
I have no sympathy for these people. Sorry.
Seth, I don’t think anyone here asked for your sympathy. I do my job correctly. I get great QA scores. This place just sucks. I think you are just happy you got a job considering your past! I’ve heard you cheat a lot on QA scores for your agents. Wonder how that news would settle with AT&T or what if you had an audit of your QA’s? I’d like to be the one to report you!!! You are an erogent JERK!!! Remember when you were removed from abay because everyone complained about how you didn’t REALLY help them and you were a JERK!!! I’d like to see you lose your job because you CHEAT!!! One girl you claim you helped and that is the only reason she passed her QA’s every month…..well she has never failed with the new QA and guess what hes tough!!!! You’ll see soon!!!! I’m going to Corp about this and AT&T. HAPPY JOB hunting to you!!!
you must be one of the lazy sups that dont do their job yet get comended for it. you suck too seth.
oh and by the way im a damn hard worker and always done my job the correct way no matter how much my lazy ass sup tore me down. he could never find a reason to fire me. Seth its not hard to have your job believe me i’ve had it.
Ha. im a collinsville employee. this company is shit. they screwed me out of my healt insurance benifits. they change my schedule everyother day it seems they dont care about u in this job. you are just another number. too big a company for me but hey its the only job around. u love your job? ull love it when they lay u off like the rest of their guinne pigs. this job is good for only one thing. holding you over till you find another job. thats it.
your full of it seth, sorry to say. i worked for startek and anytime i had a customer ask to speak to a supervisor the supervisor adamantely refused to take the call i was told to have a “senior floor rep” take the call. i passed all my calls in a-bay and as soon as i got into production i was told i was failing my calls, that were graded by a sup,( it’s weird that all my calls graded in the phillippines passed by doing the same thing in mansfield) was told that i failed for not making the one min. hold times, which is damn near impossible to meet. anytime u needed help when u raised your red flag it would take sometimes up to 10 minutes for someone to show up and customers got pissed.star tek doesn’t want to keep employees for long, the more people they hire new they get a break from the state for hiring people( our trainer told us this thats why their standards are so high she told us, the company knows most people wont meet them then they have a reason to terminate them and hire new people) u can’t tell me that they go thru these many employees each year just because these people are consistantly late or don’t do their jobs correctly. maybe if the supervisors would help people, they could do their jobs correctly.
I would like to say that i work at Startek Mansfield and I think that some of the policies there are totally outrageous, I’m not late for my shift nor am I absent but I hate the place, my supervisor is extremely rude and arrogant thinks that agents are just stupid and won’t fix anything i can’t wait to get out of there
I too work at the mansfield site it stinks there…sups never return your calls or anything heck i still don’t have my check stubs from june 2009 i got paid direct depposit but no stub..that place is a joke they run u like slaves into the ground it is like mini jail
I as well work at lovely STARTEK MANSFIELD site and it is a complete mess! You have to meet a 92% showrate each month what if your child is sick?? well damn your SOL you can’t call off b/c if you fall below that 92% then you can lose your job….SETH LOWE how do you like startek now buddy?? your qa job is going over to one of those damn phillies!!
) how can you fire people for misdameaners and a qa in there is a tier 3 sex offender for rapeing little kids boys if that and he is a guy!! and they really need to do a better job w/the background checks b/c there are some qa’s as well as sups. that have told agents that they have warrants outs for their arrest in other states! so pretty much they move here to get away from that. HOW CAN THEY NOT PAY YOU WHEN YOU WORK?? i do belive that that is purely against the law!! my friend went into work on payday to get her check and she was told that she didn’t have one b/c none of her hours pulled she had to wait 2 weeks to get a check and it was only for 1/2 the amount it should’ve been so now she has to wait another 2 weeks to get the other half..in the employee handbook it states that if your check is over 50.00 they have to write you a check that day this did not happen to her. ALSO how can someone that just started there and be on production for 3 weeks and not know there ass from a hole in the ground be promoted to a supervisor?? OH and there are people in there credited eachothers accounts and sups and OM’s know about this and aren’t doing anything i belive that is def. against the law and att policy. i don’t belive that this place will be here much longer they have a very high turn over rate. how can someone that is sick and not released to work by doctors order be denied a leave of absence for longer than 12 weeks?? i have not been coached by my supervisor in 2 months how in the hell am i supposed to know where i stand?? also now they are having people fill out these forms pick 100 shifts from 1-100 to your fav. to your least and they are going to pick your shift for you! that is ridiculous what are people going to do if they don’t have a baby sitter or anything?? well guess they are out a job…and people that are one a leave of absence don’t get to fill those papers out so they are just going to be thrown where they need them..that is ridiculous this company is a complete joke! Seth we know what you smoke in that electronic cigarette that you are puffing at your desk! you ex junky that dosen’t even had a GED!! how can people get in trouble for smoking out front of the building but christina knipp an om sits out there and smokes. this is not a great place to work unless your a suck ass like seth!!!
Katie, you say I cheat on my QA scores, but I’m not exactly sure what you mean. As far as you hoping that AT&T audits me? I have 8 calls a month, randomly pulled by AT&T auditors. They consistently come back within a 5 point variance of AT&T. So you should really, really check your facts before making accusations of me “cheating” to help agents.
Now, to the next person who directed a post towards me about how I like my job now, that it’s going oversea’s.
I still love my job at Startek. Yes, I was unhappy hearing that the QA posistions were all going to be outsourced, but does that mean I hate the company? No. Not at all. If I have to return the phones, I’ll return to the phones – and do what I did the first time get promoted.
Show up to work.
Get excellent quality scores.
Do the best I can while I’m at work.
That’s all it takes to succeed in this company.
Oh. Sorry, I did not address everything.
Ex-junky? This is true. I wont deny this, and I openly admit I’ve made mistakes in my past. If anyone can claim they never made a mistake, they’re lying. “EX” being the optimal phrase in your statement. Do I do drugs anymore? No. Not even pot. I do drink, however, but last time I checked, that was legal.
As far as not even having a GED? I wonder if you’re aware I’m currently working towards my Bachelors degree in business management.
as far as the ex junkie part seth in the last month alone i have seen you go smoke with mike and his friends at least 3 times and that is not a ex and by smoke you know i mean pot not ciggs
And what about the QA Charles Clark (Jason)? He was released from prison after doing 8 years for rape and sexual battery, came directly to StarTek.Why wasn’t he fired for his criminal background when the conducted the sweep? This guy makes my skin crawl,I wanna spit in his face everytime I see him.He is a RAPIST for god’s sake !!! Part of his Probation states he is not to associate with known sex offenders, well is working with a few everyday.Come on StarTek why is this guy still there?
Why is Charles Clark (Jason)still at StarTek after the “offender sweep”? He was just released fom Prison for doing 8 years for Rape and Sexual Battery. This guy makes my skin crawl.I want to spit in face eveytime I see him.Part of his 5 years probation states he is not to associate with known sex offenders, there are at least 2 more of these animals at StarTek that he works with everyday. And he thinks they may send him to the Phillipenes,I doubt he can transfer his parole.I contacted AT&T about him,I can’t wait to hear how they can justify this animal still working there.
StarTek – Capitalism
Without Conscience
By Lea MacDonald
After several people provided dismal reviews about their employment at Canadian StarTek call centers I decided to become an employee to investigate.
At the time of my employment StarTek was handling calls from AT&T wireless customers. StarTek makes money based on the spread between what providing such a service costs AT&T and what StarTek says they can provide the service for. By any other name StarTek is an out-sourcing company used by AT&T to thin costs associated with their wireless operation before Singular eventually bought them out.
An initial impression of being employed by a corporation harboring deep concern for its employees was short-lived. It took less than two months to conclude that StarTek personifies capitalism without conscience. Despite being staggered by the indignities people were subjected to in order to collect a paycheck I decided to walk lockstep with the StarTek training program in an intrepid effort to understand the dysfunction that contributes to a 137% attrition rate every five months.
The first week of training consisted of classroom learning continuously interrupted by impromptu visits and introductions by Human Resources personnel, Local Resource Procurement staff (LRP), and others who in relentless Stepford style perpetually pontificated about the opportunities StarTek held for them if they’d “just hang in there.” Incessant talk of “team” and “the StarTek family” took on an ominous, cult-like pretense leaving one with the impression something was wrong. That uneasy suspicion was justified in week two.
During week one trainees were told by an LRP representative they would be working for thirty-seven and one half hours each week of their one-month training period, but they would be paid for forty hours. That promise held true for less than eight days when it was summarily withdrawn without satisfactory explanation in the middle of week two. The arbitrary withdrawal of that promise did not coincide with a StarTek handout: Corporate Code of Ethics and Business Conduct, effective January 1, 2004, wherein integrity and accountability are two of seven words used to define StarTek’s corporate values. Evidently, like beauty, StarTek corporate values run only skin deep.
As trainees moved closer to their first day of call-taking on the production floor, they were trained in’ at best, obfuscation’ at worst, lying. For instance, should a Customer Care Agent be unable to assist a client they are instructed to tell the hapless caller: “Our system is currently updating and it will take a few moments to access your information. May I put you on hold?” The actual situation is one of poorly trained Customer Care Agents being unable to address the customer’s request. Such a circumstance requires the agent to place a red cup on their cubical wall to signal a Red-Hat thereby eliciting instruction for resolving the issue at hand. During my tenure not only were Red Hats, in very short supply they were only marginally better trained than the lost and frustrated agents seeking their help. It was common to count as many as twenty-five cups signaling help from one of only two Red Hats assigned to our group. Customers often found themselves on hold for hours rather than risk hanging up to be once again incarcerated in Muzak jail.
It is not the employee’s fault. Training consists of little more than a cursory overview of several wildly complex software programs with several more sub-programs housing hundreds of information pages and tools to help, define, instruct, and resolve customer issues. One system, called CCNET, is non-intuitive leaving employees discouraged, confused, and in may cases, defeated.
Julie, my training partner, was a cheerful hard-working woman possessing an eclectic professional background. She lasted two days on the production floor. Julie, in a courageous effort to serve customers better did the unthinkable, she asked for more training after realizing she could not help customers in any way. Further training was refused. Her supervisor simply told Julie, “You’ll catch on.” Apparently, Julie did catch on and headed out the door.
Agents are instructed to take ownership of their calls by resolving all customer issues, but then there is compliance – a seemingly innocuous term used to grade employees as they perform their job. Spend too much time handling a call and the agent falls out of compliance. Spend too much time wrapping up a call by documenting call issues in the customer’s account notes, you fall out of compliance. Log onto your system late and you fall out of compliance. Stay on your system a little long and you fall out of compliance. Don’t take your scheduled break at the prescribed time, you fall out of compliance. Fail to address or ask if you addressed all the customers, issues, you fall out of compliance. Fall out of compliance and you can be warned, written up or terminated. “It’s hell and purgatory rolled into one.” Commented an astute LA reporter.
Employees who made it through their first 90-days with StarTek were promised a fifty-cent raise – a raise which never materialized for the group I trained with. One employee wrote: “The newcomers that joined this prisoner camp a year ago September were told that once they reached their 3-month probation they’d receive a 50-cent raise with their performance review. Now, when the time has come, they are being told, No, not until after a year,. Unfortunately, nowhere in their agreement does it state this, but I have proof that they did state it because my hire group and everyone up to this hire, did get a raise. A friend of mine has had meetings with Laurie Hutchinson’ the HR Manager, who frankly said they are not going to give it to him. They said that there will be an internal investigation and, no doubt, as with all internal investigations conducted on my behalf they will sweep it under the carpet. They made a verbal promise to these people and they are not following through with this. I was hired then received my 3-month raise of 50-cents, and at a year I received 26-cents with another performance review – now I am making a whopping 10.76! So, if they don’t get raises, I don’t understand why I did and everyone after me did not.” It is appropriate to note that my hire group was made the very same promise last August but StarTek did not follow through and went mute on the subject.
If accountability is the thorn in StarTek’s side integrity is its Achilles heal. In a written evaluation of StarTek’s business principals weighted against current practice a former StarTek management employee gave them a score of ten out of one-hundred. He wrote”Integrity– This is where I feel the management team is struggling the most. Decisions on a site level, get made without, what appears to be, taking constructive input from the other departments possessing a make-it-happen’ attitude. Preparation for change needs to be a focus. Input from those that are affected by the change needs to be taken into deeper consideration as opposed to putting out fires after the fact. False promises get thrown around, the things will change, cliché has become a standard – some form of stability should be in place. People are given promotions, based on unknown criteria, without the benefit of a proper, ethical job bid to determine if there are other suitable candidates available. Information is distributed one way, and changed on a whim. Again’ structure is needed in order to achieve goals. Knee-jerk reactions to situations should be minimal, and stronger preparations for what if, should be taken into consideration.”
Howard, an oriental engineering student who had recently graduated from Queens University, was unable to immediately find work in his chosen vocation applied at StarTek to start paying back money borrowed for his education. As he put it: “I learn. Now I pay back.” Howard, an affable fellow, possessed a charming sense of humor and an enormously strong work ethic that elevated him to a Red Hat at 3-months tenure. Shortly after, Howard quit. I met him that day for lunch to ask why he,d quit StarTek. “They wanted me to lie,” he blurted, “to my agents and the customer. I won’t lie. There is not enough money to make me tell lies. I was not raised that way. They tell me just to do it. I won’t. I quit. They said I could get another promotion. I apply and they do not give me promotion. Yet I am most qualified. They didn’t even look at it. They don’t care about people in that place. No wonder they don’t want union in that place. Union makes them stick to rules.”
The union has made overtures to rank and file StarTek employees from the periphery of StarTek property after discovering that conditions outlined in the StarTek employment contract were not binding on the company and were subject to change from moment to moment. The union further contends that StarTek’s annual review process is less than fair and just. They discovered that some employees found themselves being discriminated against by losing points because they had been disabled from working due to a provable, legitimate illness, which the union believes, may be a violation of the Ontario Human Rights Code.
In a January 19, 2005-StarTek memorandum circulated to clarify StarTek’s position regarding the implementation of a union’ the StarTek Management Team stated, “Our strong preference is to remain union free . . . that it is not necessary, nor do we believe it will ever be necessary, for you to be represented by a third party.”
The memorandum comes dangerously close to the use of scare tactics in order to get employees to support StarTek’s position. The memorandum asks: “Did you know that the Canadian National Federation of Independent Unions, is actually an affiliate of the Laborer’s International Union of North America, based out of Washington’ D.C.?” Apparently the StarTek Management Team has forgotten it’s own south-of-the-boarder affiliation with its parent company. What’s good for the goose, evidently, is not good for the gander.
The dubious memorandum goes on to state that signing a union card is “evidence of supporting the union.” Such a statement spawns question: “Evidence? What type of evidence? How does StarTek intend to use this evidence? In a court of law? To browbeat employees? To bring action for dismissal?” While StarTek’s use of the word evidence might be considered an unfortunate choice of words, they move on to caution employees about being “tricked into signing a union card as a means of obtaining more information.” Clearly, such a statement assails the integrity and motivation of union proponents. My personal experience with StarTek compels me to urge them not to throw stones while living in a glass house.
I have recently left Hell (Startek). I got sick in July with the swine flu. I got pneumonia and ARDS from the swine and wound up in the hospital. I called off one day while in the hospital and told them I was on oxygen and would be in there for a while. My 3rd day in there I was put in ICU. While in ICU I was called and they told me I did a no call no show. OK Startek was the least of my worries. I could not breath. I was on 100% oxygen and nearly ventilated. Startek didn’t care. When I got out I had a lot of issue and got put on FMLA. My FMLA was approved until November 20th, 2009. Somehow someone messed with the paper work and the paper work in HR office said I returned October 12 and then went on FMLA again. WEll seeing as though Oct 12 is my birthday I know I didn’t go back that day. They extended FMLA until Nov 12 but failed to contact me and tell me anything. I didn’t find out any of this information until November 30th. This place needs help. They need Jesus. I will not be going back EVER!!!! I have found a new customer service job at home and make $18+ an hour. No more being told when I can use the restroom. No more compliance. No more dealing with the unorganization of the company and the lack of communication. Oh they lost all of my personal items while I was in the hospital. I should charge them. God knows if I lost their headset the would charge me. I want my personal items back. No one could seem to find them. I’m going in and asking them if I can look in storage myself. One agent was promoted after working on the floor for less than a month to supervisor. How the hell is that possible? I worked at the Mansfield site by the way. You have to be a kiss ass to make it there. I will not kiss ass. They screw so many people there. Training is a joke. You learn nothing. I have told many of my friends whom are still there about customer service jobs at home. I pray they will leave that hell and jump on board with me. While i was off on FMLA over the summer I had 3 supervisors. All of them called me and asked me what was going on with me and did I quit? UMMM communication here……IM ON FMLA. Someone will sue them eventually and they will learn or will they? Whoever believes this is a great place to work is CRAZY…..you only believe this because this is the only place hiring. They fired people for misdemeanors but there are sex offenders still working there. Male sex offenders that is. A female sex offender applied for the job and got turned down. Yet there is a QA guy who went to prison for raping a little BOY!!! What a sick sick man. Startek doesn’t want to help their customers. They just want to take as many calls as they can to make more money. I gave away credits like crazy. It wasnt’ my money and they gave me a 250 limit per caller per day. I gave out mad money. Someone called in upset ohh let me give you a credit. Someone called in happy about their service oohh let me give you a credit. Shit if I would have had at&t I would have given myself a credit lmao. I have the good service Verizon. MY last days at Startek I couldn’t breath I was gasping for air and i had to keep working. Its only a matter of time before the tax abattment is complete and startek will move on leaving many without jobs. If this happens to you contact me you can be making big money like me. Tonight I made $60 in just 2 hours. That will never happen at Startek. My advise for anyone working there still RUN RUN RUN!!!!
Stephanie-
Where did you find a CS job paying $18.00/hour. I am just about to start at Startek, but now I am worried after reading this.
This place sucks it’s a shithole to work in at least the one in Mansfield Ohio is they set you up for failure and are constantly firing and alot if them are good employees with good showrates who fail the vendor scorecard. It’s a joke there.
The people Startek has “screwed over so bad” are the ones who got themselves fired by calling off all the time, not adhering to schedules and policies, and listening to all the other “horror stories” from employees and ex-employees. Let me tell you guys, Startek is a good place to work as long as you strictly follow the rules. Show some responsibility and do your job to the best of your ability. They really don’t fire you unless they have a reason to. They’ve been good to me over at the Mansfield site. Y’all need to take your bitchin’ and whinin’ somewhere else.
I was looking into applying to Startek but glad I found this site. I just want to know from Stephanie is how do I get the information to what your doing.
Priceless…..
Startek is up to the same old business. In fact they are getting rid hundreds of people. For more news on all these layoffs check out http://www.antistartek.org/.
Hey Seth did you find another man to fuck your ugly out of shape piece of shit junkie you call a wife yet? Yeah too bad even faggots and juggalos wont do it… go suck a dick scumbag… maybe Shanell Banks has one for you… ugly fuckin toad
I began working at Startek in 2010. I made it through the training course with flying colors…. of course all we did in “training” was color and play games. Yeah I can take being paid for watching movies at work haha. It was pretty pathetic. Dont worry about passing a test or the final exam, some failed horribly and were still put on the floor. ABAY was a joke- when asking a question we got “check mycsp” we recieved little to no help what so ever. When finally going out onto the floor…. talk about clueless. Nothing like a company sending 20 people out to work not knowing what to do. It was horrible!!! No training, no help, and all I knew how to do was credit and give away money LOL what a joke!!
They say check myCSP because they don’t know the answers themselves….
i too worked at startek mansfield. I worked there for 8mo, got good scores did really well in training. Twards my 7th month, my baby sitter became ill and oould no longer watch my kids during the day for me. I checked into daycare, all of wich were open from 5am-6pm, My shift usually didnt end till 7pm. I had no one to pick them up for me, as we live far away from our families, and my hubby works a swing shift. I explained my need to my supervisor to move either to a night shift, or to go to a shift between the day care hrs so i could continue work. He told me “No, I dont wanna hear your sob story as to why you need moved. I’m tired of loosing my good agents!” and refused to discus it further. I was very insulted, and went directly to Jack, and asked to be moved, told him what was said to me. He said he’d take care of it. The next day, my sup called us all into a ‘huddle’ (bitch session) and proceded to tell us all “if you dont want your fucking job get out! i dont need you here i allready have your seats filled!” this shocked me that he’d swear at us and etc. A few of my friends on our team, knew what was going on, and why he was yelling at us.. he continued to tell us that the next person to go over his head and say my supervisor doesnt do his job will loose there’s he’ll see to it, and dont think about unemployment he will make sure we DONT get it… I went back to my desk, cleaned it out and walked out.
I work at Mansfield Startek and it is getting so bad in that place, there is something big about to happen. It really isn’t a good place to work, it doesn’t matter what you do, you are set up to fail, they are not fair with employee’s and actually lie to get themselves out of the lies they have told. I’ve worked for many years in my life and I am reading things here that I would never have imagined unless I’d seen them myself and I’ve seen them. Startek actually makes money on the number of people they graduate from training, something like $1500.00 a head. Well, when you go out on the floor you are freakin totally lost, callers are allowed to call you any name they want to, cuss you out, call you bitches, stupid, dumb, you name it and we have to sit there and listen to this. I was logged off my phone several times due to the fact I had to use the restroom due to illness. I advised that it is illegal to log me off the phone, if something was to happen to me from the time I went in to aux code and they log me off I could be laying somewhere injured, passed out, whatever, it may take hours for someone to even look for me since Im logged off they probably figured I went home without even checking for me….LAWSUIT!!!! I have been shorted several times on pay due to the fact that I was told I would get incentive pay, well I worked the hours but I’m still waiting for the pay! I show up everyday unless I’m sick and the Dr. has me off work and a doctor’s excuse..I’m pretty sure my Dr.s excuse will override startek…I really thought I would like this job, was excited to have a job, but the way they treat people its horrible. You have four chances to pass Vendor Score Card, if not your gone, they give you a paper bag and walk you out the door…I can show myself out, thank you! I found the way in I will find the way out! Then you put in for vacation that you advised them of the first day of orientation and I was told to let my trainer and supervisor know… I did inform them of my vacation plans, competed the paperwork and also put vacation in computer for confirmation. After weeks of getting this straightened up with all my supervisors cause I’d already had two since starting, when I ask my Supervisor if he had heard anything about my vacation time and he looked in my eyes and said yes it has been approved….well then I moved to a new section with a new supervisor and had to start all over again. I had to explain everything over again, and when my current supervisor asked my first supervisor about it he said ” I don’t recall” come on dude you looked right at me, and told me it was approved. This same supervisor wrote me up for going to bathroom alot, I got excuse from Dr. stating my diagnosis, he stated if I get excuse he will tear up write up, he did. There is so much more to say, the fact that Makati grades all of our calls, well who grades Makati’s calls. It is so ridiculous the stuff you have to actually read line by line to our customers and we get alot of calls in a day. Could be pages and pages of stuff the customer doesn’t want to hear, they want the problem fixed and get off the phone, but you can’t do that. I just wonder if AT&T knows half the stuff that is going on in that place, Startek blames it on AT&T but honestly I think its startek crap…..Verizon doesnt go through that kind of expectations and crap when you call them, as long as you are working, taking care of the customer and being professional thats what matters. I really wasn’t aware of all the rapists and such at mansfield startek, but I don’t think the place is going to last long, I think they will get out of tax abatement by stating they are running out of employee resources like they’ve done in their past.
I just recently started training at Startek Mansfeild anf I LOVE IT… it is soo easiy and training is amazing…. so why does everyone seem to hate it so much????
I am currently stuck at startek Mansfield…because I have a family to provide for and nobody else is hiring. PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT EVER CONSIDER APPLYING TO THIS JOKE OF AN EMPLOYER!!!!! Everything that people are saying on here is true…STARTEK has got to be the most corrupt and sickening employer I have ever heard of in my life…Even people who have worked at Wal-Mart (who is known for mistreating its employees) would rather go back to work there. There is a 130% turnover rate for a reason people…They LIE to people and Cheat people EVERDAY….and SETH, why have you not figured out that everybody talks about you because you act like an arrogant fool!! Your job isnt crap, so you have no reason to walk around like you are some sort of big wig. I am definately calling AT&T about the Sex Offenders, And the Corrupt people at Startek. The only thing I have to look Forward to is my last call, on my very last day. If the person that calls is nice…they will get $250.00 in credits and 5,000 free rollover minutes. If the person that calls happens to be a JERK…well then, they will get an earfull of my screaming and cussing back…and their service suspended along with every feature removed from their plan anddd I may just fry their sim card BECAUSE I CAN!!! ohhhh how I look forward to that moment…it will be the best day of my life!!! I will never have to shudder when I walk into the building and be greeted by the smell of dirty clothes and sweaty feet again! oh happy day!!!
Oh yeah, before any of you Loyal StarTek dumbasses start talking your shit about how the people that are complaining don’t show up to work or do their jobs right….here ya go. My performance and my attendance are near perfect, so you can take all that and shove it up your ass!!!!!!! RUN TELL DAT!
I started at Startek on March 10, 2008 at the Mansfield Site. I was in the first Wave, here it is June 2011 and I am still @ Startek surprisingly. I agree with a lot of what people are saying about Startek especially the Mansfield Site. Ok, the day I started I was excited! You know starting a job that pays $9.00 an hour for the 1st 90 days then it jumps up to $9.25 an hour. That’s something you don’t see in Mansfield. We had our training class over at the old E-City building and had some trainers From the Collinsville Site come and train us. Well in April we moved to the new building to begin ABAY and finish our training. We were put out on to the phones and pretty much LOST! Even in production we were lost! My supervisor was horrible.. it was always check Mycsp constantly when we had a ? after we have searched for 20 minutes! She refused to take Sup calls so it was always left up to the floor walkers. Not too mention LARRY omg the old site director… thank god we have Patrick now! Larry was just… Wow… a very strange and crooked man.. Along with a lot of others! Things are a little better now, and I am glad they did away with the showrate thing on June 1st. The 12 point system was so much nicer! The vendor score card on the other hand is BS,…. I got 1 bad vendor scorecard so far.. and its because my AHT was extremely high.. But they found out why. I was on the phone with a very irate customer for 5 1/2 hours who refused to hang up, who refused to speak to anyone else but me but expected me to fix everything on their account. Finally the call ended for me to get yet another IRATE customer. So between those 2 calls I had a very screwed up AHT. But to make a long story short… Startek is not what its cracked up to be…. but if you do your job, come to work things can be ok.. I am still a rep.. i refuse to go above that! I am not being labled as a kiss ass. Thats what alot of people who work for Startek who have been promoted are… its not based on QA, its not based on anything other than who you know, and how much ass you kiss.. (SETH) whether or not your promoted. I am now on a better Team and actually get the help I deserve from my Sup… I have been there 3 years and yes occasionally i still need help.. but your going to need it with all the shit that keeps changing constantly from the greeting to the resolution to shit in mycsp.
i started startek in april 2008, third wave(not current employee at this time). The site director as of now, his name is Chris…not patrick(isn’t patrick in the training dept?!). showrate 92% and points sytem= showrate is better than point system. i have seen them both in action. Vendors is BS, that i agree with, they didn’t even have a vendor scorecard when we started, not til about dec 08/jan09…but thats so long ago and there have been many changes since then. I am however ashamed of the personal attack on seth. did u ever see his scores etc? probably not. seth was a damn good agent and a good supervisor. (no i am not his g/f and no i am not him. but i have known him since i started & how good he did). this maybe the case for some other sups, as i know 3 atleast off the top of my head, that i think got promoted by who they know. I am glad to hear you are on a better team, as i know very well…mycsp and the info changes a lot &even after 2 1/2-3 yrs we still run into things we need help with. I have an idea of who u first sup couldve been, but then i have seen more than 1 sup do that in my tenure there. i was put out onto the floor “lost” as well. I agree that it is not what it is “cracked up to be”, as it was all smiles, candy and woo hoo’s w/the wave. now its a stress on your mind and body to work there with the “office politics.” i hope that you will continue to have a job, but collinsville just closed its doors yesterday. there are more startek sights going up in other countries and this means usa jobs for them will stop. They are “seperating” sups almost 1 a week and one of the best trainers just quit today. i also heard about the management ppl being told on 7/15/11 that if another vendor wasn’t found for the site by 8/15/11 shut down is possible and i hear there have been “consultants” at the cite w/management in last two weeks. I used to love my job, worked my ass off to stack rank anywhere from 2-20th, one of the first set of ppl to be employee of the month, many kudos via e-mail, many certificates of acheivement and peggy james herself took a kudos for me. but i would not go back now. seen to many things in almost 3yrs i was there, i was fired about 2 1/2 wks before my 3yr anniv. vendors of course, i was just at the point where i couldn’t take the “shenanigans” anymore. i wish all startek employees current or past the best!
p.s- jack was a damn good OM no matter what anyone thinks.
Lets see who gets the last laugh on StarTek now…. a class action lawsuit is being filed by and for the former employees… just got my letter today…. its for the time spent booting up and all the programs needed before logging on to the phones for work….suing for back pay… and of course StarTek is fighting it…. they r sooo stupid… glad I am not there anymore….
Got my papers too!!! hahahaha That made my day! Good luck getting outta this one Startek…You are gonna own millions and I hope you go under.
me too! but i feel bad for their current employees.
(Because Mansfield in general is a shit hole, thus the reason startek is able to thrive here….)
I moved back to Mansfield due to financial reasons in August of 2010. I’m currently staying with my parents while I am attempting to pay off an old school debt so I can actually go back to school and finish my degree (I’m only 22).
Now, after an incident with the day care center I worked at prior to Startek, I had nowhere else to turn for employment in this hell hole called Mansfield, OH. I was stuck, and as much as it hurt my soul to even apply to Startek, I did because I knew for a fact that the money would be good, minus the political work bullshit. Also, I’m an AT&T customer, so I viewed the job as working indirectly for AT&T Mobility.
Training was very common sense- follow the information in myCSP and learn to use the systems, and it’s smooth sailing. I’ve worked in customer service before (not at a call center), so I’m used to going above and beyond to help out a customer. If I expect myself to do that, and I’m expected to do that by my employer, I would think that my employer would be willing to help me.
The few rare times I did receive help while I was in ABAY training, it was never very helpful. I was always seated in the corner of the training area (not by choice), and no one was ever able to see my help sign; I was at work for almost an hour longer than I was scheduled for a training day because I had my help sign up, but I was in the corner so no one could see it and everyone had already went home.
Ok, I was slightly willing to brush that off. I started on the production floor in April, which is when the real trouble began. I had an incident in which my bank account information was compromised, so I had to close my account and open a new one. Being on direct deposit, I informed startek ASAP and provided the new account information THE SAME DAY that I changed the bank account (and the bank teller WARNED me about how startek operates); my information wasn’t processed until one week later, in which I still had to ask how I was going to receive my pay, because none of the details from HR’s end were clear. So, I knew i was going to get a paper check for the next 2 pays. Paper check one- MISSING…. What the fuck?! How does this happen?! I fought for almost an entire pay period to find out where my money was; I had just made a $1000 payment for my school tuition and had other bills to pay, plus I was flat broke. There was no word as to what happened. Finally, I had to beg Deb Carper in HR (who really helped me out, by the way) to find a way to get my check. She went out of her way to cut a check that same day (although it was over a week late at this point) and drove to the house of a supervisor who was sick, just to get their signature so I could receive my payment. I was grateful, but the fact that this even happened and took so long to resolve was absolute BULL SHIT to me. And yes, a majority of the people who work for the company are rude, smelly, don’t dress well for work, etc.
Politics are also a huge issue within the company, but I won’t touch that topic because I’m sure every work place has it’s issues with that.
Long story short, I’ve sold my soul to Satan himself (obviously, there’s a lot more to how bad this place than what’s been listed), and because of the pay, it’s going to be hard to leave, even if i find a job elsewhere. I just hope that this company would stop being so inconsistent and full of “catch 22′s”.
